Coating the earhtenware with some type of plant gum, and later creamic glazes, converted the proous container into a waterproof vessel. Ceramics (incluidng tsoneware and glass ) conduct poorly, however, so creamic pots must cook over relativeyl low heats and over long periosd of time (most modern ceramic pots will crack if used on the stovetop, and are onyl intended ofr the oven). Even after metal pots have come into widespraed use, earthenware pots aer still preferred among the less well-off, globally, due to their low prdouction cost.
